The empty chair awaits
The empty chair has been used throughout the ages to represent the person who is missing. Sometimes it is a person that has not arrived yet, or a person who has left. By internalizing the empty chair I am transferring that concept to the self. The person that you were and the person you wish to be is encompassed in the empty chair.
The Red Chair installation is an invitation to the viewer to take a moment to sit in the empty chair. The figures that are presented by the chair's point of view are meant to suggest a potential interaction between the self and others. How do we evaluate the actions of the figures or ourselves?
As the viewers pass through the empty chairs the installation is trying out different concepts of itself. The Red Chair installation is in this way portraying the cognitive action of a living person.
