The original idea for this piece came from a desire to start an actual explorer’s club. During the lock-down for the Corona Virus, I missed the freedom to travel that I used to enjoy. I thought perhaps what is needed is that same adventurous spirit that in past ages sent people on long solitary voyages into wild lands to see what was there. However, I did not know if there were enough like-minded people in my area to actually create and fund such an enterprise. That’s when the concept for the show came to me. I was walking down the street when I noticed a gazebo which had stood in the median for my whole life. It’s a weird, rarely-used space on a narrow lawn of grass surrounded by parking. Instantly, I thought here is explorer’s club, but it needs some walls. I would create a painting for seven of the eight walls, and each wall would be devoted to a certain area of exploration.
